❥Progress: I love comic books. That said I also love art. That said i also love poetry. Recently I walked into Barnes and Noble in search for SAT prep books and got side-tracked when I saw "Demo" sitting on the shelf. I recognized the name Becky Cloonan, because she was the illustrator of The True Live of the Fabulous Killjoys and Dracula, two comic series that i LOVE! I read the back and couldn't believe it! Each issue in Demo was an isolated story, but they all revolve around the lives of young people. Originally, the series was intended to focus on young people with supernatural powers — which many of the issues indeed do — but as the issue progressed, the stories increasingly focused on people, relationships, and emotions, with the "supernatural" angle quietly deemphasized. In other words, it was a bunch of short stories with sick illustrations & impacting plots (and plot twists)! The stories where realistic until they brought in a sense of fantasy by introducing the characters "power". The book also included poetry in issues like: " Mon Dernier Jour Avec Toi (My Last Night with You)". I can't believe i found a genre in literature and art that i can really sink myself into.
❥Reflection: The above photos are just to showcase the type of literature i'm generally interested in. I can't remember when I got into comic books, but for a while i stopped purchasing them because i was told they were "adult picture books" and "don't count as actual reading" at school. Thanks Ms. Thomson. Anyways, Since discovering them again i have rekindled an old love, while connecting my new found love of art and illustrating. Although i don't really know what to do with this new connection. I again can't see myself writing or drawing comics. Maybe writing? It seems like a hard community to join as comics also seem to be looked over. I don't know whether to continue this chapter or just let it die out as the end of the quarter approaches, either way discovering a passion for writing was an interesting experience. Maybe for now i'll just stay an observer and just enjoy material instead of making it.
